The Chiltern Centre is dedicated to supporting young adults with learning disabilities. They may also have physical disabilities and/or complex medical needs. We offer each individual a range of experiences, enabling them to spend time with friends, learn new skills and enjoy new opportunities, whilst their families enjoy a much-needed break. Vitally, we provide invaluable continuity of support and care between teen and adult years.

Each young adult has a unique range of needs and wishes that we are ideally placed to support them with. We encourage them  to learn new skills, build towards greater independence, make friends and have fun. By focusing on choice, and the individual needs of each young adult, they gain confidence and self-esteem and experience greater joy in their lives.

The Chiltern Centre provides a safe space to form friendships and do things that might never normally be accessible to them. They are able to feel part of a community, to feel the confidence that comes from doing things that are new, different and exciting. They are able to have independence from their family. They are able to socialise with people of similar ages and with whom they share interests. Through careful timetabling, we are able to ensure that young adults come to the Centre alongside others with whom they share a bond, an interest or a rapport so that they truly enjoy their time with us. They are able to learn new independence skills that will set them up for the next stage of their lives. They are able to share meals, enjoy a relaxed evening and do crafts together. They are able to get out and about and enjoy all that the local area has to offer.

Trek Toubkal 2024 – Mission Complete!

UPDATE: We are thrilled to announce that our Toubkel team completed the 4,176m climb in the early hours of the morning on Friday 31st May and raised a huge £24,000 for the Centre.

This years overseas challenge sees 8 Chiltern Centre supporters take on the dizzy heights of the tallest Atlas Mountain in Morocco, Mount Toubkal.

After months of preparation in 2023 the expedition could not go ahead as planned due to the earthquakes. Now we have the green light for their departure on 28th May 2024.

Our fearless 8 include Jane Ainslie, our Fundraising Manager and Nick Steel who is our Fundraising Trustee. Between them both they have taken on the mighty Thames Path, trekked across the Jordanian desert and even summitted Kilimanjaro.

Joining them we have Ben Ansell, Jenny Williamson, Malcolm McGilchrist, Matt Mackinnon, Marc Gross and Cheryl Purver.

As a team they have raised an incredible amount of money.

Trek Toubkal!

Trek Toubkal in aid of the Chiltern Centre

The Chiltern Centre is delighted to announce the launch of our next fundraising trek with 360 Expeditions. This time taking on the highest of the Atlas Mountains, mount Toubkal. In 2019 and 2021 the Chiltern Centre’s fundraising treks to Kilimanjaro and Jordan respectively raised tens of thousands of pounds for the Centre whilst giving the participants the opportunity to have an experience of a lifetime.

‘This experience ticked every possible box for me. Stunning scenery, challenging trekking, uplifting in every way, powerful and at times intense. To make friends, get out of my comfort zone and have such an incredible experience all whilst raising money for such a special charity is something that I will never forget.’

Harriet Barcella, Jordan 2021

Join us for your own experience of a lifetime, from 28th May – 2nd June 2024. Reach the almighty 4167m Toubkal peak, making your way through ancient villages and along rocky paths to the refuge where we begin our ascent to the summit. Morocco offers colourful culture, friendly Berbers and sprawling mountains that make this a truly unforgettable adventure.

The diverse itinerary gives you the best chance of summiting an iconic 4,000m mountain, while offering a taste of the wonderful  Moroccan  country and culture in a short timescale. We start our journey in  Marrakech, Morocco’s fascinating, frenetic and other-worldly capital before transferring to the foothills of the Atlas.

As part of the Chiltern Centre team you will have the unique experience of trekking with a group of people with a common goal and desire to support young adults with disabilities. You will make friends to last a life time, and at the same time change the lives of friends and families at home.

The Speakers

Our Host – Marco Barcella

Photo of Marco Barcella

Marco grew up in Glasgow with a Scottish mother and Italian father. His first real experience of travel was being bundled solo onto a bus aged 10 to make the journey to the south of Italy for a summer with his grandparents. It was then that Marco realised that getting from A to B could be an adventure in itself. Fast forward 10 years and you would find Marco travelling the world by bike, guiding groups up mountains, across continents and through deserts – getting to experience the best (and the worst) the world has to offer. After a few years away from adventure he rediscovered the joy of getting out of his comfort zone during lockdown and embarked on a crazy year of cold water, heavy lifting, tree climbing and some epic walks. Marco will host the evening and tell a few stories of his own. He tells us he won’t show any pictures of his naked bottom this time #ifyouknowyouknow!

Rebecca Watson

Photo of Rebecca Watson

22 years ago Rebecca was diagnosed with epilepsy. The doctors said she would grow out of it … but she’s still waiting. The doctors told her that her life would have to change to manage the condition. Rebecca chose to prove them wrong. She has taken a year to travel the world solo, done polar expedition training to go on an arctic expedition, worked as a rescue medic in Cambodia for 6 months, volunteered in the Mountain Rescue team for 8 years, canoed the Great glen way, achieved her Mountain Leader Award – despite camping being one of her biggest fears due to epilepsy, worked as an outdoor instructor in the Middle East and UK, kitesurfed, white water canoed, rock climbed, climbed the 5 highest peaks in the British Isles in 5 days… the list goes on.
Through adventure, Rebecca reconnected with herself, learnt who she is, what she is capable of, how to support her mental health and much more. For years the doctor said NO but now, Rebecca has shown herself just what she is capable of and gained an appreciation of what and who is around her.

Marta Misztal

Photo of Marta Misztal

Marta Misztal is a hiker, adventurer, and a mountain climber. Her true passion for the mountains began 10 years ago when trekking through the Inca Trail in the Peruvian Andes. After this expedition, she started climbing increasingly more difficult mountains, and finally in May this year she climbed Everest.Marta’s goal is to climb Seven Summits (the highest mountain on each of the seven continents). She’s only left with Carstansz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya) to complete the challenge. She’s also on a mission to complete the Crown of Europe which is the highest peak in each European country. Having already reached 22 out of 48 peaks she’s got a good chance to be the first person in the world to complete both challenges together, so the race is on!

She also dreams of Explorer’s Grand Slam, which is the Seven Summits challenge plus the North and South Poles. But, as she often says, “one step at a time”, so she focuses on the crowns first before making further plans.

Nicky Button

Photo of Nicki Button

9 years ago Nicky came home from skiing and was no longer able to see her daughter across the living room. Within nine months she was registered severely visually impaired/ blind. At the time Nicky was exceedingly busy as part of a team providing rigging and safety for stunt work in the tv and film industry. She was also white water rafting most weekends and part of an Urban search and rescue team. She returned to Devon and found solace in walking the coastal path, even joining several local walking groups. Feeling both the mental and physical benefits of walking regularly Nicky set up a walking group for people with sight loss. She spent last summer walking sections of the south west coast path wild camping along the way and carrying my own supplies. In the last year Nicky has climbed Ben Nevis and completed her first unguided 50km ultra challenge over Exmoor. Allow Nicky to share with you the unique way that she now ‘sees’ the world.
